Nose Surgery Procedure
Your rhinoplasty surgeon will make incisions for accessing the cartilage and bones after numbing the area. This can be done using two general techniques – open and endonasal. The size of your nose can be increased or reduced by removing or adding bone and cartilage to the nose. You can also adjust the supporting the structure inside the nose or shorten or lengthen its size.
- Tip of the nose can be remodeled using tip grafts made from cartilage. The nasal tip can be made longer, thinner, shorter, or more uplifted.
- Skin and other soft tissues can be remodeled for assuming the shape of the underlying structure
- Fat grafts or tissue fillers can be added for increasing volume in target areas
Incision Approaches
Your cosmetic surgeon can perform the procedure using two main incision approaches – open or endonasal (internal). There are other ways to augment the nose or smooth surface deformities besides these incision options.
For instance, autologous cartilage grafts can be removed from the nasal septum for restructuring the nose. Septum is the wall within the nose that divides one nasal air passage from the other.
Rib or ear cartilage can also be used if bone and cartilage have already been removed from the septum. In some cases, bone from the skull can also be removed. Solid silicone implants can also be inserted. However, these are foreign materials. It is recommended to use natural cartilage is available.
Open Rhinoplasty
The incisions will be made outside the nasal wall during an open rhinoplasty. Another small access incision will be made on the underside between the nostrils that connect with other incisions made inside the nose.
Advocates for open rhinoplasty state that it fully opens the nose to provide better visual. It also provides a more direct route for surgical manipulation.
Endonasal Rhinoplasty
The incisions are made in the nasal passage for this type of rhinoplasty. The incisions are hidden and invisible after this nose reshaping plastic surgery. Advocates for this procedure claim that it permits limited dissection of the tissues.
